Endangered Animals

http://artex09clay-heihigh2014nbcj2014.blogspot.ca/p/drawing.html

Endangered animals are animals at risk of extinction.  There are not many of these animals left in the world, and that gives them the risk of their species being extinct. People around the world have tried to help these animals to prevent the extinction of their species. I have selected two of the many endangered animal species.

Giant Panda

The Giant Panda is the rarest member of the bear family, endangered due to the habitat loss from human construction and illegal poaching.

The rare black and white bears lives in bamboo forests, high in the mountains of Western China. The bamboo forests are cool and wet. Broad-leaf and coniferous forests with dense under-story of bamboo at elevations between 8,500 to 11, 500 feet is where pandas are mostly found.
Pandas are omnivores, their diet is almost 99% bamboo. They also eat other grasses/vegetation and  small rodents/birds. Pandas eat 12 hours a day, must spend 10 to 16 hours foraging and eating, and must eat 26-84 pounds a day. In the summer, they may climb as high as 13, 000 feet to feed on the higher levels of the forest.
The birth of a panda is 95 to 160 days after mating, and a panda can bear 1 or 2 cubs. New born pandas are about the size of a stick of butter, 1/900 the size of the mother. A newborn panda can grow up to 330 pounds and stays with their mother from 1.5 to 3 years. The Breeding maturity for a panda is when a panda is from 4 to 8 years old When a female gives birth to 2 cubs, usually only 1 survives.

Snow Leopard

Living in the central Asian mountains, these cats are know to as "The Kings of the Mountains."

Usually hunting at dawn and dusk, snow leopards are opportunistic predators and sometimes hunt live stock when available. Scientists found that they eat quantities of grass, twigs, and other vegetation. It takes 3 to 4 days for a snow leopard to consume a prey animal. A snow leopard  is able to take down an animal 3 times its own weight, and in some areas, they are known to hunt in groups.

This cat has the ability to jump 6 times the length of its body, and has a long tail for balance and agility. Their fur is able to change color with   the seasons.

The snow leopards mating season is between January and mid-March. Their litter size is 2 or 3 cubs. A female gives birth in rocky dens, lined with their fur. When a cub is 3 months old, they follow their mother on hunts, and remain with her through their first winter.
These cats are endangered because they are often killed by local communities and farmers, climate change, and their habitat range continues to drop. Over the past 20 years, the population of snow leopards decreased by at least 20%.
